Decline of the Italian glaciers from the year 2000 to 2100

This map provides a visual representation of the projected glacier retreat in the Italian Alps from 2000 to 2100

This map provides a visual representation of the projected glacier retreat in the Italian Alps from 2000 to 2100 under two different scenarios: one in which the targets of the Paris Climate Agreement are met (SSP1-2.6) and another that represents a business-as-usual scenario, i.e. a scenario in which there is no change in emissions and socio-economic levels (SSP3-7.0). As can be seen, the impact of climate change on glaciers will be significant in both scenarios. However, with continued efforts to reduce emissions, many glaciers would stabilise in the long term, albeit reduced in size, and thus retain some of their functions. If we do not act quickly, however, we will have lost most glaciers completely within a few years, with destabilising consequences for ecosystems and water reserves.
