Woodside’s Burrup Hub is the most polluting fossil fuel project currently proposed for development in Australia. Involving the extraction of six untapped gas fields and the drilling of 84 wells off the Western Australian coast, the planned hub comprises two offshore gas projects, Scarborough and Browse, alongside the expansion of two existing onshore gas processing plants, Pluto and Karratha.
Located in close proximity to 12 protected marine parks – including the UNESCO World Heritage site Ningaloo Reef – the Scarborough and Browse projects present potentially deadly risks to critical ecosystems and various endangered and vulnerable marine wildlife.
In collaboration with Greenpeace International’s Global Mapping Hub, Greenpeace Australia Pacific has developed this mapping resource alongside a detailed report that tracks Woodside’s record of serious accidents and mishaps on its offshore drilling operations.
When read together, this map and the accompanying report demonstrate the geographic extent of the Burrup Hub and the potential marine impacts and threats posed by it. These key-findings further challenge Woodside’s claim that there will be no harm to the marine environment or wildlife from the Burrup Hub project.
